Don´t miss our last Coffee Morning before summer break and use the opportunity to connect to other members, meet the new SIWA-team and meet Prof. David Mason while enjoying a delicious coffee.

Speaker: Prof. David A. Mason, a Professor of Korean Public Service at Chung-Ang University, Seoul Campus, and a longtime researcher on the religious characteristics of Korea’s mountains.   Prior to his assuming his current post, he served as a professor of Korean Cultural Tourism for 9 years, as a consultant for the national Ministry of Culture and Tourism for 5 years, and as professor of English out in the Korean countryside for 17 years. A citizen of the United States, native of Michigan, he has been living in South Korea for 33 years now, always following his passionate interest in hiking Korea’s forested mountains and visiting their historic spiritual sites.  He was appointed the Honorary Ambassador of the Baekdu-daegan Ranges by the Korea Forest Service in January 2011.

Topic: “Solitary Sage: the Profound Life, Wisdom and Legacy of Go-un Choi Chi-won” This is also the title of David Mason´s  book coming out in March 2016.  It is a complete overview of the life and philosophy of that very important figure of Korean history (lived 1100 years ago), all of the 80 sites associated with him, the 2000-year history of the Gyeongju Choi Clan, early Korean Daoism and Confucian scholarship, and his position in the 20th and 21st century of Korean national-identity.  Every Korean knows his name, as he is in all the school textbooks.  But the international community doesn’t know so much about him.
