Topic – North Korean Refugees

Welcome back to Seoul for those who have been on vacation or visiting their home country! Don’t miss our first Coffee Morning after the summer break and use the opportunity to reconnect with other members and meet the SIWA-team, all the while enjoying a delicious coffee and snacks.

About the Speakers

An estimated 30,000 North Korean refugees have escaped to South Korea since the late 1990’s.  Sharon Jang endured working at the coal mines for 13-15 hours a day as part of the “despised class” in North Korea; she was doomed to a life in a coal mine because her grandfather was a South Korean POW during the Korean War.  Sharon escaped in 2012 to China to find freedom away from the most notoriously repressive regime in the world.

Join us to hear Sharon’s harrowing story and to learn about TNKR (Teach North Korean Refugees) from co-founders, Casey Lartigue Jr., and Eunkoo Lee. Since its founding in 2013, over 280 North Korean refugees have been connected with 580 volunteer tutors and coaches, helping them learn English and public speaking.

Casey is American; a columnist with the Korea Times in Seoul and co-editor of Educational Freedom in Urban America: Brown v Board after Half a Century. He is former co-host of the podcast, “North Korea Today.”

Eunkoo is Korean; a former researcher with Korean Development Institute and Database Center for North Korean Human Rights.  She holds bachelor of arts and master’s degrees from Ewha University.
