Topic: Ecological Challenges in Korea

Due to rapid economic success many countries are currently facing various ecological challenges. Current environmental problems make us vulnerable to disasters now and in the future. As our environment quickly changes, we have to be aware of the problems surrounding it. Some of them only affect a few ecosystems, but some are drastically changing the landscape of what we already know. Problems include deforestation, natural resource depletion, overpopulation, global warming and climate changes to name but a few, and of course not forgetting pollution.

Air pollution is one of the bigger issues to be talked of and one of the biggest concerns when relocating to Korea. But not only foreigners feel uneasy when going out on a foggy day, but also Koreans fear for their health.

At the August Coffee Morning, our Guest Speaker will give us an overview about the ecological challenges in Korea and explain reasons and solution approaches for the mentioned problems.

Speaker: H. E. Chung Rae Kwon, Ambassador for Climate Change

Ambassador Chung was the chief negotiator for climate change issues representing the Republic of Korea from 2008 to 2010 and is now Professor Emeritus of Incheon National University. Since the early 1990s Ambassador Chung has been involved in international environmental negotiations for climate change and the Rio Earth Summit in 1992. He contributed as a lead author for an IPCC special report on technology transfer and received a personal copy of 2007 Nobel Peace Prize as contributor to the award of IPCC Nobel Peace Prize 2007. He studied at Georgetown University in Washington D.C. and graduated with MA for Foreign Service. He served as Director-General for International Economic Affairs, Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Trade of Korea.
